Mining the Windfall

Mining the Windfall

The Spotted Towhees and other birds are busy mining the newly fallen oak branches from the big storm. They forage mainly on the ground using a unique two-footed scratching maneuver to find food under loose debris. I first learned this bird as the Rufous-Sided Towhee; the ornithological nomenclature group has renamed it the past decade. Pipilo maculatus

  • We know this as a rufus-sided towhee, and see them in Marin occasionally. This one is a particularly pretty example of its kind.
