Unscathed
The blooms of California Milkweed are an oasis of soft color in the now-golden meadows of summer. They look so perfect because their milky juice is poisonous and wards off most munching or browsing animals. Similarly, the caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly feed on milkweed parts and store the poisons to make themselves vile tasting to birds.
